Red Cliff 2

Another Chinese movie (original name is Chi bi xia: Jue zhan tian xia, Chinese: 赤壁; pinyin: Chìbì )that reached the shores of all the continents and caught our attention: Red Cliff 2 directed by the famous John Woo releasing a wonderful movie magnum opus Red Cliff. The movie depends a epic battle between a warlord and several clan members gathered up to overthrow the bad system and all its injustice. It is wonderful to see the movie and all its glam oust because it depends the warfare of that time very well with all its tricks: from the spies sent into the other camps that used pigeons to rely messages to sending diseased bodies to the other camp to infest them.

The whole movie is about whits and tactical thinking, compared to a game of chess, they always had to think 3 moves in front of the adversary; from the start until almost the end there will be no fighting but a series of event that will keep you close to the screen and saying “I wonder what will they do now” and it is perfect in that way because you will be able to see how they thought the war several times over until leading the forces to slaughter each other. The first trick the warlord deployed was to send all the diseased bodies from his camp into boats, and putting all the armor on the soldiers so that when they arrived on the other side they would be plundered by the opposing force and by doing so spreading the disease. The second trick the other side employed was , being outnumbered and out geared they needed a substantial amount of arrows to have a chance of repealing the imminent attack and winning. So one of his generals suggested that he can get 10000 arrows in 3 days time or else he will give his head up on a platter but in return the chief leader should spread a rumor on the other camp so that the warlord would suspect his generals of treason so they would be executed. Both of them succeeded and the manor they got 10000 arrows was very surprising.

Red Cliff 2

Red Cliff 2

The general waited until the fog settled in and took 5 boats covered with grain and faked and attack on the enemy’s armada; as the fog covered much on the battlefield the warlord’s troupes fired thousands of arrows just for them to be collected by the 5 decoy ships. As you can see the tactics were very well thought out and there are many more things in the movie that each and every one of us that like Chinese culture would definitely enjoy in a movie like this one without hesitation. That’s why Red Cliff 2 is a perfect war movie in my opinion and also a gateway to ancient Chinese warfare and also Chinese culture and beliefs during war time. All in all it’s a perfect movie to be watched by any fan of war stories, a must have on your list.
