Crossing Over

June 22, 2009 – 7:14 am

Hello fellow movie enthusiasts, it looks like 2009 brings us with the first surprise of the year, or at least for me, with the title called Crossing Over a modern drama that follows alongside multiple views and cases on how America handles with foreign people now-a-days. The movie follows with 3 different lines the action : first is the illegal immigrants from Mexico , second are illegal immigrants from Australia and a Jew and last but not least the Israeli people  and very much how they are treated now after the 9/11 incident. The movie excels at telling these 3 stories and all have not just a main line but it’s more like a complex tree with all its branches running out in every direction, so you will undoubtedly be drawn if not by one story the other will gather your attention. Also another fact worth mentioning are the big and impressive cast of the movie with such actors like Harrison Ford and Ashley Jud and not to mention Ray Liotta. The first story is about Harrison Ford who is a policeman working for immigrations but as you will see he is probably the worst person for that job since he puts way to much feeling and heart in what he does and always gets personally involved in helping immigrants, from the start he involuntary helps a lady that got deported by bringing her son to Mexico to his house, where he is greeted by the boys grandparents. The side story of this would be the life and customs of his partner which is from Israel also this story is full of intrigue and very well made. The second story is about Ashley Jud who is an Australian immigrant who overstayed her legal period of time and was now trying to get somehow a legal status in the country so she can pursue her dream of becoming a famous actress. She meets Ray Liotta in an accident and from there sparks a very unpleasant and intrigue affair, more like a business proposal.

Crossing Over, The Movie

Crossing Over, The Movie

I will not go into further details so I won’t spoil the movie for you, but I will tell you also about the 3rd story which is about how minorities are treated now in America, especially if your Muslim, as depicted in the movie since the 9/11 incident they had being enduring a very harsh punishment that wasn’t always fair, in which they need to be very careful of what they say it and how they say it, especially when some words written have the power to lead to them being exported  to their country after living in America for over 13 years. All these stories will reveal more and more branches of side stories and also at a certain point they will all interconnect thus the name of the movie gets life and you will understand the name choice, a point in which you will understand why this is a good and very well made movie.

All in all from my point of view this is one of the best dramas that I saw for this year and confronts us with real problems and real stories from our day to day life that should concern us more and aware of the problems out there and also make more understanding of what real problems consists of.

Hope you enjoy it!

Fast & Furious

June 21, 2009 – 11:43 am

Rumble your engines, tune up your cars … Ready, Steady … GO! Fast & Furious is here in 2009 with a brand new addition to the series and the action goes back to LA and we have both main characters on screen again Vin Diesel as Dominic Toretto and Paul Walker as Brian O’Conner. The movie starts with Dominic’s crazy plans by high jacking liquid money (petrol) in a daring and crazy to say at least scene; with all the gang present there and his lovely Michelle Rodriguez as Letty, the women 20% angel 80% demon who isn’t scared to get her nails dirty. Sadly the fairy tale ends here since the trail on Dominic is hot and a lot of people are looking for him, he decides that everyone on the team should go as far away from him until the heat blows off.

Everything was ok until Dominic gets a phone call saying that Letty was killed; this is about the same time when agent Brian comes to picture with his investigation of a drug lord called Braga. You can imagine that their roads will come across one another’s and there will be a lot of sparks and flames from their encounters. Vin Diesel playing perfect the role, acting like a loose cannon wanting revenge for his lost girlfriend having no pity or remorse for the one responsible, his meetings with Brian are tense and the lines between them are solid both expressing a unique point of view; Dominic wanting blood, the head of Braga and Brian wanting to bring down the drug cartel by locking up the drug lord and bringing him to justice. The story gets more and more exciting by the minute when both main characters go on a race head on to get a slot in Braga’s elite driving team, in their plan to infiltrate de organization to get to the leader. The race if fanatic and a frenzy settles in because its being held on open streets with the traffic running, no stops, no mercy which makes it even more interesting. The stunts are well made, not top notch because a lot of computer graphics were used and for a refined eye you can tell them apart but it’s enough to keep you on edge of your seat saying “He is not going to make it! He is not going to make it! ”. One more thing I feel that needs to be told is that contrary to Tokyo Drift and the rest of the series it seems the directors since they moved the action to USA wanted to make a more dominant accent of Muscle Cars then the Import ones, so expect to see many old model and new of American made models and a bit also of other firms like Mitsubishi, Honda and Nissan. Like always Dominic finally manages to repair the “beast” from his home, that car being described as “more of a curse then a blessing”.

In conclusion the movie is well made and will appeal to all race and action fans out there since Vin Diesel will never cease to be scary in these kind of movies. Go watch it, it’s a treat!

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

June 19, 2009 – 9:44 am

After a long wait we finally have it X-Men Origins Wolverine’s story, for the diehard fans this is one of the best keep secret until now and all are eagerly awaiting to discover every bit of wolverines story and past life. As it starts you will come to face with the young version of Logan when he was just a child around the 1800’s and even more shocking you discover that Victor Creed is in fact Logans brother. Hugh Jackman is obviously still in the role of the main character though for Victor we have Liev Schreiber who plays the part extraordinary good, being able to see that he put heart and effort into building his character to maturity and understanding his unyielding rage. The cast contains many more big names like Ryan Reynolds, Scott Adkins, Kevin Durand and Dominic Monaghan although they all play small parts in the movie it still contributes to the overall artistic look and feel of the picture.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

As the story gradually unwinds you will see both brothers fighting arm to arm along the time barrier in each war from the independence to WW-I- to WW-II- to Vietnam being killed dozens of times only to awake again while everyone else were dead until they get into trouble for disobeying orders and end up in a prison cell after being shot by the platoon, where we meet Danny Huston playing as William Stryker who proposes to them a unique deal to make a special unit with unique privileges to serve the country. The team was composed of several experts like Zero, expert sharpshooter and Wade, expert blade master and several others with special abilities. They go throw out several missions to find some mysterious meteorite fragments but at a certain point where Stryker orders the killing of innocents, Logan steps in and takes action preventing it but also leaving the ranks of the unit behind. After 7 years we get to see a changed Logan, settled in and having a beautiful girlfriend (Lynn Collins) named Kayla Silverfox and living a normal happy life. As you can guess all that would be about to change when Stryker comes again and pleads Logan to help him, invoking the fact that Victor was set on a vengeance crusade and was killing one by one the old team members; but Logan refuses and doesn’t want to be any part of it.

From this point on it’s an ongoing pain experience for Logan with the most incredible turn of events all witch lead him to become a fierce animal and also a weapon called Weapon X, with adamantium (a virtual indestructible metal) skeleton making him one of the deadliest weapons out there. All ok if you’re on his side, thing that didn’t prove so well on Stryker’s attempt to deceive him moment when all hell on earth broke loose and thus the fun began. The movie is exceptionally well made and stands out the most from all the X-Men series being, in my opinion, the best made until now, not only the special effects but also the story and they way it was told, making it very credible and teeing all the loose knots the former movies had about Logan’s life that were a mystery and always were under a sign of “What really happened there”

All in all the director Gavin Hood made a strong and entertaining movie that will undoubtedly be remembered as the best of the series and will only contribute more the increasing fan’s of the X-Men series being a “must have” collector’s item; and for the rest of us a good movie and one that will keep you firm in your seat for 2 hours.

Dragonball Evolution

June 3, 2009 – 7:02 pm

I think this title is self explanatory and needs no further introduction than that it is the movie based on the famous anime series DragonBall. Director James Wong undertook the challenge to bring this title to the big screen and by doing so he created one of the worst movies I ever saw for 2009. I cannot believe that there still can make movies like this one; it is more than awfully its utter failure. The lines between characters are bad thought out, bad acted and bad directed in such a manner that by the first half of the movie you will probably go out of the theater and ask for your money back. The story starts with Goku and end with him also as the main character, he is being trained by his grandfather Grandpa Gohan starting off with a fight scene that is very bad played out and the special effects very outdated and give you a sour taste from the beginning.

Dragonball Evolution

Dragonball Evolution

Then as the action unwinds you find the story and the plot: mankind is under threat again and the only way to stop the thread called Lord Piccolo is to gather 7 dragon orbs and unite them so that the bearer can be granted 1 wish, by doing so banishing the evil from earth. I can tell you from now if you have any interest in this movie you will undoubtedly be disappointed and will never ever make this mistake of seeing any sequel of this movie. Honestly I do not have any more words to add to this movie because it was a very big disappointment but if you’re willing to take a risk or just want see how bad some movies still can be in the year 2009 go ahead and waste 2 hours of your life.

Red Cliff 2

May 31, 2009 – 10:10 am

Another Chinese movie (original name is Chi bi xia: Jue zhan tian xia, Chinese: 赤壁; pinyin: Chìbì )that reached the shores of all the continents and caught our attention: Red Cliff 2 directed by the famous John Woo releasing a wonderful movie magnum opus Red Cliff. The movie depends a epic battle between a warlord and several clan members gathered up to overthrow the bad system and all its injustice. It is wonderful to see the movie and all its glam oust because it depends the warfare of that time very well with all its tricks: from the spies sent into the other camps that used pigeons to rely messages to sending diseased bodies to the other camp to infest them.

The whole movie is about whits and tactical thinking, compared to a game of chess, they always had to think 3 moves in front of the adversary; from the start until almost the end there will be no fighting but a series of event that will keep you close to the screen and saying “I wonder what will they do now” and it is perfect in that way because you will be able to see how they thought the war several times over until leading the forces to slaughter each other. The first trick the warlord deployed was to send all the diseased bodies from his camp into boats, and putting all the armor on the soldiers so that when they arrived on the other side they would be plundered by the opposing force and by doing so spreading the disease. The second trick the other side employed was , being outnumbered and out geared they needed a substantial amount of arrows to have a chance of repealing the imminent attack and winning. So one of his generals suggested that he can get 10000 arrows in 3 days time or else he will give his head up on a platter but in return the chief leader should spread a rumor on the other camp so that the warlord would suspect his generals of treason so they would be executed. Both of them succeeded and the manor they got 10000 arrows was very surprising.

Red Cliff 2

Red Cliff 2

The general waited until the fog settled in and took 5 boats covered with grain and faked and attack on the enemy’s armada; as the fog covered much on the battlefield the warlord’s troupes fired thousands of arrows just for them to be collected by the 5 decoy ships. As you can see the tactics were very well thought out and there are many more things in the movie that each and every one of us that like Chinese culture would definitely enjoy in a movie like this one without hesitation. That’s why Red Cliff 2 is a perfect war movie in my opinion and also a gateway to ancient Chinese warfare and also Chinese culture and beliefs during war time. All in all it’s a perfect movie to be watched by any fan of war stories, a must have on your list.

Push

May 29, 2009 – 10:26 am

Paul McGuigan introduces us into the world of the paranormal, with the sci-fi thriller Push; the story begins from the time the Second World War was ongoing and  the Nazis were conducting experiments on people to make the stronger, better and deadlier. While the war ended the experiments didn’t and thus throw out the ages one government took the place of another and the experiments were always running and keeps under strict secret. There were several types of powers the people got from these experiments like: Sniffers they can touch and smell a object and tell his full history, where it has been in what hands has it been and everything about it from the day it was made and touched by someone; they were excellent at tracking humans. Bleeders were the ones that could emit a high pitch noise that disrupted everything and could kill you in a matter of seconds by destroying everything inside you and causing internal bleeding.

Watcher they could see the future, either premonitions or full things that happened in the future, although the tiniest change could make the biggest change there were still watchers that could see very well the future and predict it. Healers, self explanatory; Movers could be explained as telekinesis and finally but not least Pusher’s they were the ones that could put thoughts in your mind and make them appear as they were your own. With all these powers they were still hunted down like animals by the government cells called Divisions, the reason behind this is that they wanted to boost the powers of the ones that already have them to create a super army, but each subject failed and died after the “treatment” with the drug designed to boost they powers; until a certain subject survived: Camilla Belle playing as Kira Hudson (Pusher)but she manages to flee from the laboratories with the drug and starts to enlist help from her former boyfriend Chris Evans playing as Nick Gant (Mover).

Push, The Movie

Push, The Movie

The action also involves Dakota Fanning as Cassie Holmes and boy I’m was really impressed by this young lady acting, she is truly one big actor in the coming, she was brilliant in this role and for her age she can amaze even the biggest critic out there.

The 3’o Kira, Nick and Cassie will undergo some serious challenges and events being chased not only by the Division but also by the Chinese mafia who want the drug for themselves so that they can be better than the Division. The maze of lies extends and there are several twists in the story of the movie making it a bit more appealing; event thaw with all these plots the movie still lacks a lot of things and makes the movie feel like a second class one, a cheap replica of the series Heroes. There would be more to say but I guess it’s better to leave it this way and let you decide if this is a movie for you or not.

Role Models

May 28, 2009 – 7:04 am

Here we have a comedy with ours truly Seann William Scott as Wheeler  and Paul Rudd as Danny Donahue, the perfect combo , one is a loose cannon of parties and sex and the other is one of the biggest pessimist out there with all his will to live gone down the drain. These two guys work for an energizer drink company that has a campaign thorough out schools and the 2 main actors are the ones that need to visit each school to educate the good side of their drinks and bad side of drugs. While Wheeler is more than pleased with his life style and nonstop parties and new girls each time, Danny who has a girlfriend for years feels that there is a big gap in his life and he is caught up into something he dislikes and will never be able to rise above it.

The fun start when Danny decides “What the hell!” and loses his mind and runs from a toe company, by doing so landing in a school statue, destroying private property and being sued. Because none of them want to spend time in jail they get the judge to agree on 150 hours of community service at a local house helping children that do not fit in the community. This turns out to be the biggest twist here since; the 30 year old guys are more than boys they got to attend. Wheeler gets a child with a bossy attitude and a very big mount while Danny gets a child that, even thaw he is at a certain age when he should be socializing with other kids and attending parties, he is fixated on a fairy land fantasy with dungeons and dragons and everything in between. Both kids are very “special” in their own way and while Wheeler’s kid gets fond of his very fast due to the fact that he also admires ladies, Danny’s kid has a harder time adjusting and trying to convert his mentor to join the ranks of his fairy land warriors.

Role Models, The Movie

The movie is pleasant to watch with the whole family and as any family movie there is a lesson to learn, you will see as the story unwinds that both main characters, Danny and Wheeler learn from the kinds how they themselves have forgotten, how to have fun, how to bee themselves, how is it to feel appreciated, and most of all how is it to be loved and admired by others.

The entire movie really shows you a pleasant hour and a half of decent jokes and events that are pleasant to watch with the whole family present.

Knowing

May 27, 2009 – 4:52 pm

The movie starts in 1959 at an elementary school in which a contest in organized to honor the birthday of the director. All the kinds had an assignment to draw or write what they believe the world would look in 50 years time, all their letters being sealed in a so called “time capsule” and berried underground only to be dug up by future student in 50 years time. From the start we encounter a troubled young lady that wrote down on her assignment a series of numbers. From here the whole movie gets a thriller glow to it. You will be on edge with the whispers and characters popping in and out without any much explanation on who they are, where they are from, what they want … The next phase of the movie depicts action after 50 years of the event, exactly in the day the student unlock the “time capsule” where Caleb Koestler gets the letter from the girl with the wall of text. Immediately a weird noise settles in just like the one the girl used to had , but the young boy quickly dismisses it and goes home with his father John Koestler played by Nicolas Cage.

Knowing, The Movie

Knowing, The Movie

The action only now begins to unwind when  John stumbles upon the letter and out of boredom take some numbers from it and googled them , only to discover that they are dates of incidents throw out the world and at different time intervals all solded with huge loss of life. He then sees a pattern on the paper and slowly links all the dates of major incidents to the piece of paper and the numbers there. He tries to explain it to several friends but no one is keen of his idea and they think that he is losing his mind due to the loss of his wife a few years ago, also on the paper there were still some numbers left unexplained fact witch further everyone’s doubt on the authenticity of the paper. Thus on his way home on the highway he gets a idea while seeing the navigation system and figures out that the extra numbers were actually coordinates on the globe , for the exact spot on which the vent was going to happened. And John figures this out not a moment too soon because the next calamity was a few feet from him, he barely managed to escape. From this point he enlists the help of Diana Wayland and Abby the daughter and granddaughter of the original writer of the letter.

I think I spoiled enough until this point, what you can expect further is a series of events that will undoubtedly make you wonder “What if …?” The movie is not one that I would recommend to watch with the family since it has more than a few thriller scenes in with I would say it’s inappropriate for children. Also the story and the ending is a bit farfetched and if you saw When the Earth Stood Still you will probably wonder what is with the increasing movies on that basis , otherwise it was ok but still nothing special for the year 2009 so far , and still nothing special from Nicholas Cage.

Punisher : War Zone

May 26, 2009 – 6:41 pm

I cannot believe that in this century producers still make these kinds of movies, shoot and run, no plot no nothing bad acting skills and even more bad lines. If you take 5 minutes to reflect the movie industry you can see that we have a typical pattern something like in the 70’s there were full of samurai movies, ninjas all fighting imported from china and Japan; in the 80’s the movies were dominated by the kind of movie we are talking now, 1 man 1 desire 1 million guns shooting at him but he always survives and kills everyone; the early 90’s there was a refined version of the superhero who now usually was a policeman with a troubled past … and so on until they figure out that a movie needs to have as much realism in it and true story to be appealing to the public and have a chance at a Oscar.

Sadly our movie although its produces in 2008 I would have no trouble putting it in the 80’s category. The main character is Frank Castle an outlaw, a kind of vigilante that kills only mobsters and doesn’t respond to any law, and asi said he kills 20-30 guys at a time while they are shooting at him. The director tried to make a soft part for the character, when he raided a mob house he killed a gang member who turned out to be a FBI undercover man, but the actor plays such a bad part acting he is sorry, and I doubt anyone could play it better because simply the character isn’t supposed to feel anything from the way he kills his adversaries.

Punisher: War Zone Movie

Punisher: War Zone Movie

The movie gets from bad to worse after the main character disfigures Billy Russoti, a gang lord, who afterwards makes everything possible to kill Castle but the story is so badly written and such a clisee that you wouldn’t probably last 10 min after the movie started. Same things over and over , the mobster escapes prison , he lets his younger brother out , who as you might imagine is a psycho, they try to retake the city and after a series of deals they get the arsenal for a war. As I absolutely hated this movie I won’t go into further details but this much I can tell you the biggest and probably the worst part of the movie is when vigilante Castle arrives at his hideout only to discover that its position has been compromised and one of his friend is lying on the ground with a AXE in his chest, yes he was still alive , although that axe is exactly in the heart location. As if this wasn’t enough the dialog that followed was a big laughter , after pulling the axe from his chest Castle says to the guy “Don’t you die on me !” … I have no further things to add you can imagine what kind of movie this is.

That being said I feel that this movie should be banned from commercial especially for this century, instead being placed on those 80’s stand movies .

Crank High Voltage

May 26, 2009 – 1:09 pm

Jason Statham I’m pretty sure you all know this name and the series Crack and Driver. Well in 2009 we have a sequel to Crank entitled High Voltage; although the first part didn’t leave much room for a sequel since the ending scene was of Chev Chelios falling down from a helicopter at a very dizzy altitude and ending on the sidewalk after hitting a car, directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor thought up a crazy idea and told us from the beginning “What if” he survived the fall only to be picked off by the Chinese mafia and put in a make shift hospital where his organs would be harvested one by one for their Chinese warlord, the boss of the triads. Due to the fact that Chev survived the Chinese poison one of the best, that fact caught the attention of the dying warlord and he requested to have his heart so he can live a bit longer. The story begins on an operating table where Chev sees how his heart is being removed and replaced with a makeshift pacemaker with an external power supply. After waking up from the anesthetics he starts his usual campaign of killing spree and starts to kill one after another mob guys to get to his heart and the culprit responsible for the state that he is in.

As the first part where he needed to be always pumped of adrenaline here in the sequel it’s a bit harder and he needs always to be “charged up” with electricity so that the makeshift heart will always pump blood to his entire body. You can imagine that it’s even more farfetched then the first part and really far from the truth, seriously doubting anyone could survive 1 hour with such a mechanism and such a stress that the main character was put upon.

Crank: High Voltage

Crank: High Voltage

The passé is always increased and the gore level of the movie exceeds its predecessor with even more blood, more fights and loads of naked women to see here. I’m pretty sure this is one of the most insane movies I ever saw for a long time to see Chev going throw countless enemies to get to his heart, but the best part is that event thaw the story with the heart isn’t that plausible to keep him alive the main character is so well played by Jason Statham that you will have no problem believing his acting and him always playing as the tough guy beating everyone around; so the movie will definitely keep you watching with intense feelings.

Even the ending just like in part one leaves you with the feeling that, yes its finally over and then after the finale you get some short sequences showing that he “might” still be alive and kicking in a 3rd sequel to come. I would recommend this movie to all 18+ viewers that want to enjoy a movie with a basic plot line and a bunch of kicking and fighting at a very alert rhythm without too much thinking of the repercussions that might occur from the things he does. Enjoy !
